The Long March Remembered (Kindle Single)

★★★★3.5·26 reviews

Edward Stourton has retraced the route of the Long March, the Chinese Red Army’s epic struggle for survival; it laid the foundations for the Communist victory in 1949 and became modern China’s founding myth. With 2014 marking the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the March, Stourton made the journey for a series of programmes on BBC Radio Four. This is his account of what he found while travelling through some of the country’s most remote regions. He encountered stories of extraordinary human endurance in the face of terrible suffering, and uncovered shocking gaps between the raw reality of the March and the way it is remembered in the official histories. And he asks whether Communist China will ever confront the ghosts of its past.Edward Stourton is an author and presenter of BBC programmes. After a career as a foreign correspondent (Washington correspondent for Channel Four News, Paris correspondent for BBC Television and ITN Diplomatic Editor), he joined the One O’Clock News on BBC1 as a presenter in 1993. For ten years he was one of the main presenters of the Today programme on Radio Four. His most recent book is Cruel Crossing, Escaping Hitler Across the Pyrenees.

Doc fetch goes through Layer's Aerospike pull-through cache; cache hit served the row without touching turbopuffer. The similar query re-embeds this product's title with CLIP-text and runs a vector query — queries don't go through the doc cache, so no cache header is set.
