Irreverent Natter- A collection of poems from my 30s

★★★★★5.0·3 reviews

A collection of poems about the 'human condition' dealing with love and loss, the emotional ties that go on to make relationships, with lovers friends and enemies. The poetry is about the long night of the soul that most of us are living through ,at the end of the first decade of the 21st century. The poetry is about the joys of fatherhood and little excitements that go on to make up the family life of a family man.Sometimes a cry of silence in the dark, sometimes a clarion call of self-fulfilment,these poems deal with emotions born from being human--having bonds of relationships with people. The joys and pains of first love are accompanied by feelings of isolation and loneliness as a result of the pain of parting.Poems like 'Christmas' express how someone can be lonely ,even in crowds:'Christmas is a time of love and joyFor every girl and every boy.People sing songs of celebrationHolly and Christmas trees go up in decoration.Jingle bells, presents and cities lit up bright-Everything is bathed in hope and light.I'm also a part of this Christmas too,But for me, another reality is also true-That Christmas is a very lonely time without you'The natural progression of the poem leads it from being a moody sad poem to one that ends in hope of a better tomorrow. The song 'Let's dream a little dream' also deals with breaking up but progresses from the cold depressing reality of sadness to one of hope and acceptance. It deals with raw emotion in a way which I find the best antidote to such feelings-by turning them into song:'Let's dream a little dream, let's lie a little lieBefore its time to go our ways, before its time to say goodbye.Me and you were heaven on earth for a little while,Doing things in halves was not my style. You were the reason night fell, you were why the sun rose,You were my peaceful dream, the end of all my woes. You were the reason to live, you were the reaon to die.Let's dream a little dream, let's lie a little lie....'While the poetry is usually emotional and serious, there are also poems like 'So...hail!' which are humorous and show an uncanny wit of the contemporary non-committal non-serious type. Here are the opening lines to 'So....hail!':'When it comes to those who need to be hailed,There are those who've succeeded and those who've failed.Out of those that have been ignored and those noticed,Ladies and gentlemen! let's hail those who've tried hardest. So, hail to the King and the QueenWho are rarely heard, though always seenBy the politi whose hearts and minds are keenTo talk; to compare what will be, what is and what has been! With all their pomp and grandeur and sheenLadies and gents! Let's hear it for the grey and the green'The examples of wordplay and poetic devices like alliteration and repetition and other verse conventions are too many in number to be discussed in totality.Suffice to say, please read with an open mind and if you like the preface to the book,I can promise you that you will not be disappointed. Also by the same author:Poetry E Motion-Celebrations of LifeLost Time Memories- Reflections From Youth
