Our family prides itself on our pranking and scaring abilities. We like to leave sweet notes with candy that’s actually just an empty wrapper. We like to hide around dark corners in the house and scare the next unsuspecting person. My brother’s favorite present last Christmas was a prank kit and book. It’s been non-stop since then: shock pens, fart bombs, whoopee cushions... So, the propensity for mischief coupled with the fact that it happened to be April 1st caused Lincoln and I to think our parents were joking when they announced the plan for the first part of the summer. “Jade and Lincoln, hold on a second,” Dad said as we got up to leave the table after dinner. We were eager to go outside before it got dark. Today was one of the first warm days of the season, and we wanted to experience every last drop of daylight. “So, for the last few years, Nana has come here to stay with you while Mom and I attend our annual conference, but this year has to be different.” Lincoln and I looked at each other. My mind was trying to predict what might be coming next: Nana staying with us for a week right after school got out has been our modus operandi–that’s the one and only term I remember from Latin class this year; it means a usual way of doing something. Ugh. Latin class. “...so that’s what will be happening this year. If you enjoy it, maybe we’ll do it this way again,” Dad concluded. “I wouldn’t count on that,” grumbled Lincoln. Mom didn’t appreciate Lincoln’s attitude. “Come on, Lincoln. It has to be this way this year. Nana does us a favor by helping us out. We need to be flexible. It won’t be that bad. It’s where I grew up. It’s a nice place.” “Um, at the risk of annoying everyone, can you repeat the plan? I zoned out.” “Really, Jade? You’re so annoying,” Lincoln replied. Lincoln and I get along...sometimes. I’m always willing. He isn’t. So, when he is, we get along. When he isn’t, we don’t. We are 15 months apart. I’m older, but he’s taller. I keep waiting for the theoretical “girl growth spurt” that is supposed to come before the “boy growth spurt”, but I’m starting to have my doubts. He loves that he’s taller. He wishes he was older, too. We pretty much function like we’re the same age because if I dare pull the “I’m older” card, he’d kill me for sure. Mom sighed and recapped what Dad had just said. “Instead of Nana coming here this year, you and Lincoln are going to her house. And instead of it being for one week, it will be for three.” “Wait, what? You’re kidding, right? This is a joke? ...No? Why?” My mind spun as I processed this change. We like our first-week-of-summer-with-Nana routine. We get to sleep in, hang out with our friends, and she takes us out for ice cream pretty much every day. It’s the perfect first week of summer. “Well, the conference is in California this year, and it’s our 20th wedding anniversary, so Dad and I decided to combine the conference with an anniversary trip. Nana can’t come here for that long because her sister is not well and she has to be nearby to take care of her if she needs help.” Now, I don’t usually cop an attitude like Lincoln, but this news was putting me pretty close. “Sounds perfect.” My sarcasm did not go unnoticed. “Listen to me, both of you. Life isn’t all about you. This is how it needs to be this year. I’d like you to work on changing your attitude. If you let yourselves, I think you may actually like it. Langhorne is a great town. And it’s close to Philadelphia. Nana said she intends on taking you into the city to see the historical sites.” Dad’s tone indicated that our attitudes were not welcome, so if we were going to have them we needed to keep them to ourselves. The topic was dropped and Lincoln and I hurried to clean up and go back outside.
