Game Changers: Power - Control - Deception

From the Inside Flap Carmen returns to her office and notices a red light flashing on her telephone notifying her of new voicemail for review. She throws her folders on her desk, takes a seat, and begins to go through her messages. One of the messages is marked urgent. There was a two-thirty deadline for picking up a new campaign promotion packet from a client by the name of Ms. Petross. Ms. Petross identified herself as the president of Upscale Cosmetics. "Oh my God," Carmen exclaims. "I have to get out of here." Carmen telephones Ms. Petross and apologizes for not arriving at the scheduled time. Ms. Petross informs her that it's no problem as one of her colleagues arrived to pick up the packet. Carmen asked if she knew the name of the person that picked it up. Ms. Petross replies, "Yes, someone by the name of Jake on behalf of Mr. Nicolás Martinez." Carmen expresses her appreciation for the information, hangs up the phone, and begins speed-walking to Nicolás' office. Upon arrival, she finds him going through the file. "Hi, Nicolás. I believe that belongs to me." "Not so fast. Where were you, young lady? Ms. Petross is an important client. Losing this client could have cost us big time. Do you even listen to your messages?" "Nicolás, you don't have to take that tone with me. I was with one of our fellow colleagues, helping her with a problem." "Well sweetie, it might be you with the problem now," Nicolás replies. "I've spoken with the client. She wasn't upset at all," Carmen says. "I wouldn't imagine that she would be as she believes we will honor the campaign by the deadline spelled out in the contract." "May I have the file, Nicolás?" Nicolás rises from his desk and approaches Carmen. He gets so close to Carmen's face that she begins to back up until she can feel the office wall against her back. Nicolás places one hand on the wall, to the right of her head, and in the other hand, he holds the file. "What's it worth to you, Carmen?" Carmen shakes her head, ducks under his arm, and snatches the file. "Don't play games with me, Nicolás. I'm not here for that and please don't ever pull a stunt like that again."
